Do you know that more cops on electric bikes are pulling cars over in traffic stops? The next time you run a stop sign and hear a siren behind you, the blue and red lights in your rearview mirror might look a little different.
But don’t let the bicycle helmet fool you; that ticket will sting just the same. It doesn’t matter if it comes from a police officer riding an e-bike instead of a motorcycle or patrol car.
We often hear about police departments transitioning to electric vehicles like Teslas, but many may not realize that electric bicycles are becoming increasingly common in law enforcement across the U.S.
Lieutenant Bryan Zink of the CCSD police department in Las Vegas explained to local FOX5 that Class 3 electric bikes, which can reach speeds of up to 28 mph (45 km/h), are incredibly useful when officers need to zip across campus or keep pace with cars during traffic stops.
These e-bikes provide a practical solution for officers, allowing them to navigate tight spaces and respond quickly in various situations. The growing adoption of electric bikes reflects a broader trend in law enforcement towards more sustainable and efficient modes of transportation.
“There are times when you get that look like, ‘Wait a minute, where’s your car? Where’s your motorcycle?’ Oh, no, I’m a bike cop. Pull over for your license, registration, and proof of insurance,” Lieutenant Zink noted. “It’s just the same stop, just a different way of getting it done.”
His department recently added a fleet of e-bikes thanks to a grant from the State Board of Education aimed at enhancing school safety. These electric bikes enable officers to patrol school areas more effectively and even pull over drivers who endanger students.
The Menlo Park Police Department has also embraced electric bikes for patrols, utilizing Pedego models that have proven to be light and efficient in various situations.
Local dealer Jeff Scanlan shared an impressive story: “Just last week, one of our patrol officers caught a bike thief who had stolen a bike from in front of Walgreens on Santa Cruz. He said he would never have caught him on a regular bike; by the time dispatch could direct a patrol car to pursue, the suspect would have escaped.”
This experience highlights the advantages of using electric bikes in law enforcement. The agility and speed of these e-bikes enable officers to cover more ground quickly, making them effective tools for catching criminals and enhancing community safety.
The LAPD added e-bikes to its patrol fleet several years ago, choosing German manufacturer BULLS as its supplier. “When LAPD needed an e-bike to help meet the demands of serving and protecting Los Angeles, we answered the call with the original Sentinel,” the company explained. “
This groundbreaking technology allows police and first responders to answer calls more quickly, with an expanded range up to five times greater than pedal bikes and often faster than cruisers in high-traffic areas.
The Sentinel also enables officers to be more accessible to the community while finding greater job satisfaction on their bikes without getting completely exhausted.” This innovative addition reflects a growing trend among police departments seeking efficient alternatives to traditional vehicles.
More police stations are incorporating electric bikes into their fleets as practical alternatives to traditional vehicles. E-bikes offer several advantages, including enhanced mobility in congested urban areas where navigating narrow streets or crowded events can be challenging for cars.

These electric bikes allow officers to respond quickly while maintaining a lower environmental impact. By adopting e-bikes, law enforcement agencies can improve their efficiency and accessibility within the community.
Additionally, electric bicycles are cost-effective due to lower maintenance and fuel costs compared to traditional vehicles. They also improve community engagement by making officers more accessible and visible.
These benefits have made e-bikes an appealing solution for modern policing, especially in densely populated or environmentally conscious regions. As more departments recognize their advantages, the adoption of electric bicycles in law enforcement is likely to continue growing.
Electric motorcycles have also gained popularity among police departments, offering higher speeds while retaining many benefits similar to electric bicycles, such as lower operational costs and environmental advantages. The Cleveland Division of Police recently added the locally produced electric motorcycle The District from LAND Moto to its fleet.
This addition reflects a growing trend among law enforcement agencies seeking efficient alternatives to traditional vehicles. By incorporating electric motorcycles, police departments can enhance their response capabilities while promoting sustainability in their operations.
As CEO Scott Colosimo remarked, “Our collaboration with the Cleveland Division of Police represents a future where technology and community unite to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.”
